Saxer Lücke - The Seemingly Impossible Hike

Plans that got spontaneously changed, short moments of agitation and panic, no other options, hiking up over 1000 meters of altitude, mountain lakes, amazing views and picnic with a view

We actually wanted to take it easy, we really did! But it seemed like faith had other plans...

Sitting in the train, still about 30 minutes to go until our destination, I checked the website of the cable car for the timetable. Turned out that they're starting their season only 2 weeks later. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Short moments of agitation and panic by everyone and then laughter because we didn't see that the previous day while checking the route. Shame on us. 😁 We checked other options right away but we soon realised that for us there was, in fact, only one.

So instead of taking the cable car up and doing a ridge walk, we decided to walk all the way up. To be honest, it was the even better option than to just do the ridge walk, even though we climbed over 1000 meters of altitude. Let me take you with us on the journey, you might just want to do it yourself. 😉

We got to Brülisau by public transport but there's also a parking lot should you decide to drive there. From Zurich the train ride takes a bit more than 2 hours. 🚞

From the station of the Kastenbahn we followed the directions to Bollenwees and walked a few minutes towards the mountain range before it went up.

And when I tell you up, I mean pretty steep up! It's mostly through the forest though so we were protected from the sun. After a good 1.5 hours we reached Sämtisersee where we started to have a beautiful view of the Alpstein range.

While we made our way closer to Bollenwees we came across curious cows, heard their bells from afar and saw beautiful butterflies all over. 🦋 Funnily enough, those butterflies seemed to be very attracted to the cow shit...

Once we made it to Bollenwees we could also see the lake Fählensee. Yes, you can swim there! You can basically swim in every mountain lake you find in Switzerland! Just be aware of the temperature. 😉

We usually prefer to bring our own picnic so we can enjoy lunch anywhere we like but there's also the option to get lunch in the mountain restaurant there. We then followed the signs to Saxer Lücke. We walked up for about 30-40 minutes, steep again - remember, we went up over 1000 meters - and voilà you can admire the beauty! 🤩

We hiked up for about 15 more minutes and started the ridge walk with pretty amazing views! There are also awesome spots where one can sit down for a picnic, get some great pictures like we did and admire the nature around. 😍

The whole ridge walk takes about 3 hours to Hoher Kasten where the cable car brings you down to your car or back to the bus station. Assuming the cable car is running of course! 😄

As this option wasn't available to us we followed the ridge walk for 1.5 hours until Staubern where we took the cable car down to Frümsen and caught the next bus. The tickets for this cable car ride are available in the restaurant directly at the station.

This whole story just shows you how spontaneous changes can turn out to be so great! What do you think?
