Maji Moto - The Hot Springs That Are Not Hot

The only reason why people go there, how to get to Maji Moto, deal the price, bumpy rides through scenic landscapes, entrance fees that are worth it, hot springs that are not hot, clearest blue water, lots of underwater pictures and fish nibbling on the feet, venture to a nearby waterfall and overpriced food shacks

Fun fact, the hot springs are known as Maji Moto (hot water) by everyone but the springs are actually called "Kikuletwa Hotsprings".

We took a Costa from Kia, the town we stayed at in Kilimanjaro area, to Boma Ng'ombe where we met up with Grace, our host for the few days we stayed there. She was able to secure us a Bajaji for TSH 10,000 which drove us to Maji Moto.

Check out my other post about getting around in Tanzania, there you will find more details about the different means of transport. 🚐

Locals all know that you're going to the hot springs because that's basically the only reason why a foreigner would come to Boma Ng'ombe. 😄 Just always make sure to deal with the prices!

To be honest, I don't even remember how long the bumpy ride took us but the route was very scenic. We had a great view over to Kilimanjaro, passed a few local huts with kids playing around and herds of goats or cows guarded by their shepherds. 🐐

Arriving at Maji Moto we paid an entrance fee of an other TSH 10,000. More than we expected but absolutely worth it - I have never seen such clear blue water in my life! 😍 Okay, maybe I have but you get the point. 😉

Although the name suggested that these were hot springs, I personally wouldn't define them as such. The water was neither hot nor was it refreshing. I'll tell you about my experience with real hot springs in Iceland an other time though. 😉

Gina and I enjoyed some quiet moments in the water, away from everyone else and taking a lot of underwater pictures. Let me tell you, getting a good shot under water is VERY challenging! Look at all those flailing arms. 😂 But having all the little fishies nibble at our feet and legs was definitely also a fun and ticklish moment! 😄

Thanks to a local working there we found out that there is also a waterfall not far away from the springs. It turned out to be a good half an hour walk but the fall was beautiful! The local was able to deal with the entrance price but I can't quite remember the fee anymore.

Apart from the waterfall being amazing, there were a lot of flies and mosquitoes around. Of course I got bites all over my legs. We later also found out that there are actually some crocodiles in the river above the fall! Not sure if some of us would have went into the water knowing that! 😂

We came back to Maji Moto after our little venture to get some lunch at one of the two shacks offering food and drinks. Prices there are a bit higher than at other local places because it's a hotspot for tourists and locals but when you're hungry you gotta eat, right? 😉

When visiting Kikuletwa Hotsprings I highly recommend to get there early. Either in the morning or before noon as in the afternoon there will be a quite lot of people around!

Sabbu ❤️
