Gracious Daycare, Tanzania

Meet Grace Ngonyani, the owner of Gracious Daycare. I met her on my travels to Tanzania in December 2020 and it's been a real blessing to get to know her! She's such a beautiful soul who gives her everything to help children and provide them with a good learning experience.

Grace holds a degree of Education in Science and struggled to take care of her own kids while both her and her husband were at work in order to provide for the family. One day she realised that if she has these struggles, there must be other parents out there who go through the same. With the fact that sometimes young kids are home alone the whole day, taking care of each other and just playing or strolling around the neighbourhood alone definitely showed Grace, that the need for a solution is needed.

So she set out to build a day care in Maroloni, between Kikatiti and Usa River and about 30 minutes away from Arusha. The concept of a day care is relatively new and unknown in Tanzania but she's been able realise her project and is currently responsible for over 30 children between the ages of 2-5 years.

Grace believes that all children, regardless of background, deserve a positive early childhood experience through love, care, fun and education.

Some of her goals for Gracious Daycare are:

  • Hiring five workers (she already has two!)

  • Organise kids parties and events (eg birthday parties)

  • Create or get outdoor games & sports for children

  • Diversify Gracious Daycare into 3 more centres

  • Start a nursery and primary school

Of course, a project like this is also bound to some challenges. Just to mention a few:

  • Cases of rouge house-helps abusing children or even kidnapping them

  • Some parents may have very high expectations for sending their children to the daycare

  • Increase in sectarian violence over the past few years

  • Limited access to medical facilities and medicines are often unavailable

How can YOU help Grace and the children?

Grace desperately needs equipment, learning materials, fencing and furnishings to provide these children with a loving, supportive and safe learning environment.
